outlive | the | bastards

It's here! It's here!
My dear friend Devin has officially launched her beautiful online store, outlive the bastards. Devin is one of the most adventurous, creative, and talented people I know, and it delights me to no end that she is able to channel that creativity in a way that is so deliberate and inspiring. Her store is and will be comprised of an ever-changing and evolving line of products that she hand makes from re-purposed materials. Each item is unique and sustainable, with an absolute attention to each and every detail
 (notice her hand-penned tags).
Congratulations, Devin! You can count on me being your number one customer.

Before & After

after
friday's project in texas.

Homemade Ricotta

mccall told me she had made ricotta, and insisted it was easy as could be.
i wasn't sure i believed her, until i read this recipe.
ricotta is: 4 ingredients + 5  minutes of prep + a bit of patient waiting.

put the ingredients in a pot.
boil to a designated temperature (varies by recipe). strain.

now you have ricotta.

and can put it on a homemade pizza.

next time, purely out of curiosity, i'll try this ricotta recipe, which varies slightly
(and also looks like a great way to use up that buttermilk in that's in the fridge.)

TV Table

this was a fun side project at work, designing the table for a new tv show
that launched on wednesday, "real news from the blaze."
external set designers had been asked to work on the project, but came to the producer
with a very slightly modified copy of bill maher's table (and wanted $10k for it).
we built this table for less than half the price.
the books came from books by the foot at the strand,
and the builders chopped them down so they are actually only about 2" thick each.

Souvenir

i didn't come home with a watch, a knife or chocolates.
my souvenir was a set of water colors from caran d'ache,
a swiss color-maker founded in 1924.
(ok ok, and about 3 kilos of smuggled cheese.)

Our Apartment

some of you haven't seen my apartment.
so, here it is.
couch/lamps: hand-me-down from dear old aaron. (good taste & generosity!)

glass book case from furnish green
credenza i got for $50 on craigslist and refinished, including pulls.

a map of our favorite camping spot in the catskills, split in half.
school chairs from a school's yard sale.
a craigslist bench i recovered with an old wool army blanket.

a strip of white at the top of the grey wall gives the illusion of crown molding.
an ikea island we found on craigslist.
stools, two for $80, found by rachel.
the white tin cabinets on either side of the fridge make it seem
less out of place there between the windows (and add storage)

french european school map: from mom, last birthday
poppy is not allowed on the couch. i posed her. i admit it.

the island was looking extra nice that day, so here's a detail.

Before & After

this morning while walking poppy i found this little desk.
it was ratty and knobless, but also quite light.
so i picked it up and brought it home, still holding poppy's leash,
which she tried with all her might to wrap around my legs.
after work, i found these knobs for 79 cents each at the hardware store.
the navy paint was leftover from another project,
and i made it my goal to paint the whole piece in an hour or less.
now,  it goes on craigslist.
this morning while walking poppy i found cash on the curb.

*update: sold the desk this morning for $80. a 24 hour flip!
