Architecture of Density

Home to seven million people, Hong Kong has the fourth densest population on earth. German photographer Michael Wolf captures that crowding in his beautiful if not frightening series, "Architecture of Density." Wolf has done a number of fascinating projects which focus on urban living. See also his "Back Door" series, which discover abstract patterns in discarded items in Hong Kong's back alleys.

outlive | the | bastards

It's here! It's here!
My dear friend Devin has officially launched her beautiful online store, outlive the bastards. Devin is one of the most adventurous, creative, and talented people I know, and it delights me to no end that she is able to channel that creativity in a way that is so deliberate and inspiring. Her store is and will be comprised of an ever-changing and evolving line of products that she hand makes from re-purposed materials. Each item is unique and sustainable, with an absolute attention to each and every detail
 (notice her hand-penned tags).
Congratulations, Devin! You can count on me being your number one customer.

TWA Terminal at JFK

love these photos of the twa flight center at jfk, by photographer peter brandt.
the terminal opened in 1962, and later closed in 2001.
the building's architect,  eero saarinen, (who also gave us the ever-popular tulip table)
said he "wanted passengers passing through the building
to experience a fully-designed environment in which each part arises from
another and everything belongs to the same formal world."

Michael Zelehoski's 2-Dimensional 3D Objects

last weekend while in beacon, we had the pleasure of spending some time with
michael zelehoski and his lovely girlfriend becky gordon.
michael and becky live in beacon, in an amazing old garagey space they own
and have been converting into a bright open living space and studio.
michael is an artist who deconstructs three dimensional found wooden objects
into two dimension art works. he disassembles the piece, slivers each of its
constructive components down to a fraction of an inch,
and reassembles it into a wall-mountable "canvas"
that is a mere 2 inches thick. from a distance -- and even in these photos --
the pieces look like paintings. but when you get closer, you see their dimension.
(you can see it best in the picture of the chair.)
michael does a much better job of explaining his process here.
and his website features some photos and video of him at work.
i'm not very plugged into the art world, but i do think these are pretty damn amazing
and would love love to own one some day.
(i especially love the idea of having him compress down a meaningful piece
of furniture or an heirloom that would otherwise be too clunky or out of place.)
and thanks to brent and rachel for introducing us to such an amazing pair.

The Post Office Project

today the new york times's lens blog highlighted an interesting
photo-documentation project by kristoffer tripplaar.
tripplaar, who is only 28, has photographed some 400 post offices
in a dozen states over the course of the past three years.
above are some of my favorites.
the full collection can be viewed on the project's flickr collection, here.

Balancing Maddie

elmira, mi

sparkman, ar

birmingham, al

minneapolis, mn

photographer theron humphrey is currently working his way through all 50 states.
he is photo documenting his year-long trip by sticking his travel companion
-- a coonhound named maddie --
on top of various local objects, and having her balance.
the result is a lovely collection of photos of maddie on things.
while i am partial to this rustic collection here,
its important to note that maddie demonstrates a set of much more daring talents:
she balances on bicycles, shopping carts, and canned goods.
i think this is my new favorite photoblog.

Weegee at ICP

last friday sebastian and i went to check out the weegee exhibit
icp is in the building i have worked in for a year, yet i had never been.
in addition to collecting an impressive amount of the photographer's work,
icp recreated weegee's bedroom, displayed his camera and hat,
and even recreated the photographer's original one man show,
"weegee: murder is my business" which originally showed
at the photo league in 1941 (and is where the icp show gets its name).
definitely worth the visit. oh, and icp is "pay what you will."

Souvenir

i didn't come home with a watch, a knife or chocolates.
my souvenir was a set of water colors from caran d'ache,
a swiss color-maker founded in 1924.

Vinnie's Iron Works

on friday i visited vinnie's italian iron works,
a place i have passed 100 times, but never anticipated visiting.
(i needed a chandelier's pole to be shortened from 21" down to 8".)
jimmy, presumably related to vinnie, and certainly the "boss" of the operation,
was there to help. he works in this office, which i had to sneak a picture of.
look at that old brooklyn map!
